SIZING & SPACING

Rhinestone sizes, gaps and design dimensions

Understand how stone size, gap and physical dimensions affect your design and cutting template.

Beginner6 min readFree tutorial

Every rhinestone template has two related dimensions: how large the artwork is on the finished project, and how much space each stone needs. Getting those right matters more than a pretty zoomed-in preview.

1. Understand stone size

SS sizes are industry size categories. Different product suppliers and stone types may have slightly different physical measurements, so verify the diameter for your actual stones rather than relying on the SS label alone.

SettingWhat changesWhat to watch
Smaller stonesMore positions can fit into a designHigher stone count and finer stencil cuts
Larger stonesFewer positions, bolder lookSmall details may disappear
Wider gapMore separation between adjacent holesSome thin regions may become discontinuous
Narrower gapDenser layoutRisk of joined or fragile stencil areas

2. Know what a gap means

The distance between neighboring stone centers is approximately the stone-hole diameter plus the chosen edge-to-edge gap. Actual stencil-hole dimensions should be based on your stones and stencil material.

3. Decide finished dimensions first

Pick a real width and height for the shirt, bag or other blank. A detailed graphic may work at a large back-of-shirt size but lose features when shrunk to a small chest logo.

4. Inspect your preview at two scales

  • Zoomed in: inspect overlaps, isolated circles and the outer edge.
  • Actual project size: check readability, balanced composition and visual contrast.

5. Always test the cut

Use a small corner or sample motif first. Confirm the stencil holes release cleanly, the stone fits as intended and neighboring holes have enough support material.

Important

Never assume an imported SVG keeps the correct physical size. Verify its measured dimensions in your cutting software before cutting your full project.
